Cider Events 2009

This year, 2009, we held 2 tutorial events where Andrew Lea shared his experience on cider making. This particularly benefited those who had cider making experience and wanted to learn more.
We covered such topics as relying on natural yeast versus added yeast cultures to start the fermentation, the use of sodium metabisulphite to control bacteria and film yeasts, and keeving versus adding sugar to get a sweeter cider.

We intend holding a similar tutorial in 2010 - so if this sounds of interest, please register your interest.

The Cider Tutorial with Andrew Lea:
2009 Saturday 23rd May and Saturday 11th July at Putley Village Hall
10.30am-4pm £30 per person including lunch

Our guest tutor, Andrew Lea, has a great cider pedigree having conducted research at the National Fruit and Cider Institute in the 70`s and 80`s and been a hobby craft cider maker for many years.
We are delighted that Andrew has agreed to share his experience and improve our understanding of how the apples selected and cider making techniques can alter the flavour of a cider.

We will start the day tasting a range of craft ciders to compare the different flavour notes, sweetness and bitterness levels. We will look at the apple varieties used and where the ciders are made. From this appraisal we can start to form a picture of which ciders we prefer and why.

We actively encourage any cider makers to bring a 75cl bottle of their own cider to include in this tasting.

We will then move on to the techniques the cider maker can use to achieve different ciders.

Because this is a participatory event, we are limiting the numbers for each day.  A local-produce lunch to complement the cider is included. To reserve a place, please email or telephone with your details and let us know if you will be bringing a bottle of your own cider.
