Other bits & pieces... The Big Apple Twice a year the seven parishes parishes of the Marcle Ridge in Herefordshire celebrate their heritage of apples and pears, cider and perry. If you enjoy orchards, apples or cider this is a weekend for you to enjoy - see how we get involved on the Pressing Dates page.
Accomodation Herefordshire Tourist Information gives information on a range of accomodation as well as other activities in Herefordshire including the Cider Cycling Route. Accomodation local to Putley, The Coach House B&B is in Putley from where you can enjoy the footpaths through the surrounding orchards. Cider makers Mary & David run a rural B&B close to Putley. Pixley End Camping and Caravan site is conveniently situated next to the Trumpet Inn which has good food and ales. If you fancy Glamping (glam camping) then try Putley`s Yurt experience. Or enjoy a luxurious night at The Verzon House Hotel at Trumpet where rooms are named after local apples.
Pubs with Cider The Butchers Arms at Woolhope is currently the only pub we supply with Little Cider Press draught cider or perry. They have bottles ciders available and typically four real ales on tap. The Butchers Arms` was recently awarded a Bib Gourmand in the 2010 Michelin Guide.
The Crown Inn at Woolhope has an excellent range of cider and perries but don`t get tempted to take the Cider Challenge! Excellent local food and a host of cider events including the community making of Matt`s cider and perry we made with Matt in 2009 and 2010 - see his photo gallery on-line.
Further Information There are some excellent web sites: www.cider.org.uk is Andrew Lea's web site and he has some excellent information and guidance UK Cider site has lots of useful information from and about other craft cider makers
There are some easy-to read-books which are all mentioned on other web sites - but Real Cidermaking On a Small Scale by Michael Pooley and John Lomax dedicates a chapter on Troubleshooting which will also explain why we are so fastidious about cleanliness at every stage of the process.
Cider-Making Supplies Sodium metabisulphite for sterilising containers, syphon tubing and airlocks can be found on a number of brewing shops or on-line. We have used www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk Photos Many thanks to Peter who designed the initial web site including the photos used in the banner, and to Alexsei who took many of the cider making photos. Other photos were taken by Peter, Alexsei or myself.
